AN HOUR TO POWER THE FUTURE

Every day at the Club, Members have the opportunity to learn and study in a supportive atmosphere. Power Hour is focused time each afternoon that Club Members can spend on math, reading, STEM-related activities, and homework completion, with support to provide guidance when needed. Power Hour not only provides a safe environment for learning, but also fosters the strategies necessary for kids and teens to become self-directed learners and create daily habits that achieve school-day readiness and academic success.

In addition to homework, Members participate in high-yield learning activities including chess and other strategy games and engineering tasks with robots. Flexing critical thinking muscles is guided and encouraged during this time. Power Hour is also an important opportunity for staff to learn and understand the academic needs of Club Members, create relationships and develop trust with Members, and to learn about Members' interests and how best to guide them.

David, who attends the Caroline S. Mark Site, participates in Power Hour activities that challenge him to put things together. "I do puzzles - they take a while. I like those types of games. I like to play games on the computer or board games too, sometimes I play with other people."

Recognizing and celebrating participation is an important part of Power Hour. Club Members earn points for participation and are rewarded for achievements through monthly celebrations. For many Members, the recognition from staff and peers is encouragement to continue participating and to become confident learners.
